Risen Word Bible

The King James Version in today’s English

What it is

The Risen Word Bible is the King James Version (the Oxford text of 1769) with its grammar and outdated words brought into present-day English. It is not a new translation: it keeps the KJV’s wording, word order and rhythm wherever they are still clear, and its New Testament follows the same Greek text as the KJV (the Textus Receptus).

What changed

• thee, thou, ye → you, and the old verb endings with them: he saith → he says, thou hast → you have
• archaic words → their plain equivalents: unto → to, spake → spoke, whither → where
• words whose meaning has shifted since 1611: charity → love, conversation → conduct, devils → demons
• hell → the names in the Hebrew and Greek: Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, Tartarus
• pronouns that refer to God are capitalized: He, His, You

Kept as in the KJV: its word-for-word character, familiar phrases such as the Lord of hosts, and the words of faith (grace, righteousness, sanctify). Every change is recorded with its reason.

Reading it

• Tap any verse to see it beside the 1769 KJV, with the changed words marked.
• Lord and God in small capitals stand for God’s name in the Hebrew (YHWH).
• Psalm titles are part of the text, shown in grey italics above the first verse.
